Tell me Something About Poitiers
Poitiers was a key city in history, for if the Arabs that had invaded Europe had not been defeated there in 732, then the whole of Europe’s history may well look very different today. Equally important was the English victory at Poitiers in the Hundred Years War. Today, the city is more of a large town but with some interesting places to see including the Baptistry of St John, one of the oldest Christian buildings in the world, dating from the 4th century. Outside the city is the fantastic science museum called Futuroscope dedicated to the science of the future.
What’s the Best way of Getting to Poitiers?
The city has a small airport called Poitiers-Biard which has flights from three cities, Lyon, London and Edinburgh, the latter two being with budget carrier Ryanair. There’s also a seasonal charter flight to Corsica. The airport is less than two miles from the city with good bus links.
What are the Airport’s Facilities Like?
It’s very small and the terminal is barely longer than an aircraft. You’ll have to take the aircraft steps to disembark and then walk to the terminal building. There, passport control and baggage reclaim are quickly sorted out before you find yourself in the arrivals hall. If you need any advice on airport matters or just want to find out the times of the buses into Poitiers, just ask at the information desk.
For the collection of a pre-booked hire car, the rental desks are in the arrivals hall along one wall. There is an ATM for cash withdrawal should you need it. On your return, you’ll find an excellent café bar called the Edge of Heaven in the round tower with 360 degree views of the airport. There are no shops there apart from a small kiosk selling newspapers and light snacks and understandably, no Wi-Fi availability.
