Being a fortified town originally built Gerard, the Duke of Lorraine, in 1050 there is evidence of early settlers from 800BC.
Emile Galle, the furniture maker and glassmaster is attributed with the eclectic mix of architecture Nancy has on offer. He and a group of artists, such as Louis Majorelle, created the Art Nouveau décor it has today.
