Carcassonne is a town within the Aude Departement and is thought to have historically been a trading town around the sixth century BC. Located on Rue de Verndun is the Museum of Fine Arts which is open every day year round. Inside you can find paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries. It is a great attraction for all and is free to get in.

With your Car Rental Carcassonne you can take a short drive to the Basilica of Saint Nazaire which is a cathedral located on Place de l'eglise. The site dates back to as early as the 11th century and is open to visitors everyday but does tend to close early evening during winter months.

Rue Trivalle is where you will find an exhibition inside the Cultural centre containing a memorial for former soldiers. Open Monday to Saturday you can view items such as documents, costumes and objects all relating to soldiers of the country.

For a unique way to view the city you can opt to take a boat trip or guided tour. There are many trip providers that can offer tours such as Independent Tours located on Rue de Verdun, who will focus on the country estate. The trips typically take up to 2 hours and can be conducted in a range of languages such as Spanish and English.

For a special experience you can hire a boat from quai Riquet throughout the week which will accommodate up to 12 people and gives the option of an overnight stay onboard. Hence this is a great fun option for couples, families and groups.

Other popular sites include Ponte Marengo birdge which at night looks spectacular with its magical lighting. The bridge is built across the Canal du Midi providing great photo opportunities.

Carcassonne Mini Guide

The historical fortified city of Carcassonne in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France is considered to be a World Heritage Site and well worth visiting if you happen to be in the area.
Having a car is essential in this part of the world as it allows you to get out into the quaint hills and villages which surround Carcassonne armed with your Michelin guide to finding the best restaurants with the best wine lists. It is also a place in which you can do wonderful wine tours. Among these are a guided tour of the Rennes de Chateau which featured in the best selling Da Vinci Code book by Dan Brown.
The only drawback to Carcassonne is that it can get very busy during the summer months. This in turn means that the prices are quite steep.
However, one very good value for money piece of entertainment is to go see the Medieval jousting display which takes place at Carcassonne as knights on horseback do combat with each other. You can see this show twice daily between the two walls of Carcassonne castle.
The town of Carcassonne was built on a hill in the south east of France centuries ago and dates back to Roman times.
It was recently restored by the French architect Viollet-le-Duc and featured in the movie Robin Hood Prince Thieves.
Among the accommodation options in Carcassonne are the Hotel de la Cite which is an upmarket establishment and certainly not an option for those on a tight budget.
If money is a bit tight it is also possible to go camping by the river in Carcassonne which overlooks the castle. The camp site is well appointed and has a swimming pool and tennis.
All you have to do is follow signposts from the town centre.
