Cahors Mini Guide

Cahors is located in the south west of France, with a population of 23,003 in 1999 with numbers rising since. The city is close to the A20 motorway making it very accessible with your hire car.

The area is well known as many in France are for its wine, especially its Cahors red wine. Some can be sampled in one of the many restaurants in the city such as The Balandre, which is a formal establishment perfect for special occasions, and is a choice for those where budget isn't a main concern.

If looking for a more relaxed alternative you can try Bordeaux, which serves a great range of French and European cuisine for a reasonable price, so is a good choice for families or even those on a budget. If you are just looking to sample the wine and not eat then you can visit one of the many vineyards that can be found along the D8 road to the west side of the city near the rivers.

The Valentre Bridge is a popular site amongst tourists and is a landmark of the town. The attraction was completed in 1378 and restored in 1879. The latter year saw the placement of a small sculptured devil to the tower.

Visitors can take a stroll along the acanthus leafed path from the Pont de Valentre and admire the many gardens, amply named The Secret Gardens due to the various gardens being separately enclosed. It is said that pilgrims would cross there on their way to Jerusalem.

Some other great ideas for days out suited to all include a visit to the nearby Cathedral of Sainte Etienne or even a visit to the towns market place. There you will find local treats such as truffles, Rocamadour goats cheese and large peppers.
