There's quite a bit to entertain the visitor to San Miguel. Take a hire car as far as you can up the slopes of the dormant volcano, Chaparrastique before walking the rest of the way to the crater from where you can get a great view of the city.
San Miguel has many modern shopping centres around the city, the most modern and best of them being the Metrocentre. Visit the downtown area for a taste of colonial San Miguel where Spanish style homes still bear their 16th century dates of construction.
San Miguel Mini Guide
San Miguel is a department as well as the largest city in El Salvador. Just under half a million people live there. It is located in the eastern part of the country. San Miguel used to be known as San Miguel de la Frontera. By hiring a car in San Miguel you can make the journey to Santa Ana or San Salvador which both have pretty good shopping in modern malls.
The standard and choice of shopping in San Miguel has improved from recent years and continues to get better all the time. Over recent years the city has practically doubled in size and there has been much investment in new retail outlets and various shops. So there might not be as much reason to leave San Miguel as there has been in the past.
Staying in San Miguel itself you will almost certainly want to go to the San Miguel volcano which is an impressive site. This is just one example of the great natural beauty of the country.
Downtown San Miguel is also worthwhile visiting as there are some attractive buildings there. Another reason to visit San Miguel is the surfing available on the coast. You can stay in the lovely Las Flores Surf Club where there are hammocks and it is generally a good place to relax and unwind.
