El Salvador Mini Guide
El Salvador is Central America’s smallest country but also its most densely populated. The country was first visited by the Spanish in the 16th century and colonised soon after with the defeat and displacement of the local Pipil and Mayan tribes. The country originally had a very long name, ‘Province of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World’ which was eventually shortened to El Salvador, the Saviour.
The country’s coffee industry was developed by the Spanish bringing great riches to the landowners and hardship to the slaves who worked the land. Following a series of coups d’état in the 20th century, and a costly war with Honduras, the country finally settled to rely on the income from its coffee plantations and the growing importance of tourism.
Unlike other Central American countries, El Salvador has less to offer the tourist in terms of beach life. Where it benefits is in the big rollers that come in from the Pacific giving ideal, but for now mainly undiscovered, excellent surf. The country is now marketing itself as a surf destination and plans are underway to host surf competitions in the region to make best use of the conditions and promote the country’s tourism.
El Salvador offers a lot to the eco-tourist with plenty of trails through the interior jungle and up the many volcanoes, some dormant, some very much active. The country’s main national park, Bosque El Imposible is stunning in its pristine beauty and rarely does a visitor disturb the calm there. There are a number of islands and island chains too which time has not touched and fishermen go about their chores in a languorous manner whilst children play on the beaches where turtles heave themselves up to breed each year. Diving from these islands onto unspoilt reefs is an experience not to be missed either. Historians will also love the Mayan and Pipil ruins that dot the country with temple complexes rising up through the forest, many of which are UNESCO recognised sites.
The cuisine of the country is unusual too with sliced and fried plantain served with cream, roasted turkey served with beans and rice and the traditionally Mexican food of refried beans. You must try a pupusa whilst in El Salvador which is a soft tortilla pie often filled with cream cheese or meat and beans. If none of this sounds appetising then there’s a range of international food served across the country. There are several very different soft drinks available across the country including many made with lime and pepper or chilli and liquorice.
The country uses the American dollar as its currency meaning that prices will be familiar to many. Surprisingly for a Central American country this alignment with the US has meant a large number of shopping malls with upmarket shops and boutiques have sprung up catering for the American tourists that now flock to the country they perceive as almost being another US state.
El Salvador is raw and edgy still with many undiscovered facets yet it’s familiar enough to make it feel safe. If visiting Central America is on your list of things to do, make El Salvador a high priority on your list.
