Agouza was named after an old woman who used to sell coffee to passing motorists. Agouza is the Arabic for old woman and so the name stuck to the neighbourhood. Another interesting story appertains to Nawal Street, named after the palace there where the 6 year old daughter of the owner lived and died and was immortalised in the name of the palace.
In the neighbourhood you’ll also find the Egyptian National Circus and The Balloon Theatre which seem to combine to put on unusual spectacles for the public.

Where is Agouza?
Agouza is a small district of Giza in the city of Cairo, Egypt. It is on the shores of the Nile River and between 6th October Bridge and 15th May Bridge. Its name comes from the Arabic for ‘old woman’. Story has it, that an old lady used to sell coffee to the passing drivers on the corniche and when they were asked where they were, they would say ‘We are at Agouza’ or the old woman.
How Would I get There?
Cairo International Airport has many flights arriving from cities worldwide. From there you can book a shuttle bus or limousine service to get to the city. Inside the city, you can use the metro or microbuses and taxis.
So, What can I do in Agouza?
Surprisingly, there is a rare mix of things to do in this district. You can go and see the Egyptian National Circus, they have a traditional old style circus with acrobats and performing animals. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you can see folk dancing and Egyptian music at the Balloon Theatre. Agouza is home to the Cairo Jazz Club too and they have live entertainment daily. The British Council is based nearby and they have special events and lectures. They also have an art gallery and a garden café. You may be able to visit the Al Agouza Mosque at selected times.

Are There any Restaurants Nearby?
Yes and some of the best in the area! For just a quick snack, go to Niema, it is open 24 hours and has the best schawarma, chicken wrapped in pitta bread with garlic sauce. If you like seafood you are spoilt for choice as you can eat at Flying Fish or the Seagull. The Flying Fish is well known for the oysters and mixed fish soup, whereas the Seagull is more family orientated and has an outdoor area if you want to have shisha.
