Ecuador Mini Guide
The country's political scene is almost as volatile as the landscape, which contains over 30 active volcanoes. Like the volcanic eruptions in the mountains, which sometime shower nearby villages with hot ashes, there are regular explosions as the military powers usurp a civilian government, hold power for a period, and then are replaced by another civilian government.
The main source of political strife is related to geography. In effect, Ecuador is two countries, west and east, with different climates, different terrain, and different customs and altitudes. The west of the country is a hot coastal plain, and is the seat of industry and commerce as well as an agricultural region producing the major exports of bananas, coffee and cocoa. In this region lies the port of Guayaquil.
Running down the middle of Ecuador, from north to south, are two ranges of the Andes, divided by a central plateau known as the Sierra. The plateau is broken into small, isolated river basins where most of the people live.
Life in the mountains is slower, and less obviously affected by recent change and modernisation. The capital city of Quito retains the air of a Spanish colonial town, and the Indian villages of the surrounding country seem to belong to an even earlier age.
Another area, known as the Oriente, consists of tropical savannah and dense jungle around the headwaters of the Amazon. East of Banos lies some of the last really wild, unexplored territory in the world. The region is valuable because, apart from oil, it offer major opportunities for exploitation, both of the forest (Ecuador already exploits balsa wood and rubber) and its minerals.
