Taxis: these can be recognized by an illuminated sign on their roof; their registration numbers also start with the letter T. Most are metered and are plentiful and relatively cheap.  Shared service taxis run between major towns and are good value.  These will pick you up and drop you off anywhere within the central area.  All you need do is telephone the taxi office about an hour before you wish to travel and tell them where to collect you.  For a small group of people a taxi can be a good way of touring the island; many taxi offices display rates for such excursions. Tipping of taxi drivers is optional and should not be more than 10% of the fare.

Without doubt hiring a car is the best way to explore the island in detail. However, if you dont like driving, many taxi drivers offer fixed-price excursions which can be tailor-made and are not too expensive, particularly if you can get together with others to share the cost.  There is no railway in Cyprus.  A number of boat trips operate in Summer between points on the coast.
