If you’ve hired a car from the airport, the approach to Dubrovnik gives you a taster of what it can offer; the huge fort looking down over the city and the yellow city walls that have protected it over the centuries.
In the city you simply have to walk through the old town, rebuilt in medieval times after a devastating earthquake. There, in the Placa Stradun, beautiful buildings line narrow streets which during the day offer cool shade and in the evening make for a leisurely stroll. Finally, take the cable car for a stunning view out over the city.
