Pafos or can be spelt Paphos, is a district of Cyprus which varys from archaelogical interests, popular nightspots, deserted beaches, boating haven and tourist areas.  The district of Paphos extends from Paphos Airport from where you can easily hire cars right along the coast past Coral Bay, the Akamas Peninsular and onto the pretty harbour town of Polis as well as main roads leading up into hills a the foot of the Troodos where you will find lovely villages like Stroumbi, Tala, Polemi and Psathi.

Car rental is recommended to make the most of your visit to this area but if intending to travel across the Akamas to enjoy the beautiful national trust area, deserted pebbled beaches and the peace and quiet you should seriously consider renting a 4 x 4 vehicle as the road is very bumpy.

There is a new International Airport in Paphos which opens in November 2008 which serves most major airlines/tourist operators and enhances the first view of Paphos on arrival. The airport is situated right next to the sea so within minutes of getting off the plane you see the beautiful sparkling blue mediterranean.  Paphos is an all year resort unlike some of the resorts which can be found in Eastern Cyprus like Aya Napa so whatever time of year you visit you will be sure to find plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels, activities etc. along with of course sunshine.

The town of Paphos is divided into two separate areas, there is Kato Paphos which means lower/down Paphos where you will find the beautiful harbour and promenade which has recently been refurbished which offers plenty of delightful restaurants where you can sit and watch the boats come in and often the arrival of a Bride and party as many weddings are held literally in the harbour on two boats which have been converted to wedding venues.

Plenty of fishing trips are also on offer at the harbour including Tuna, Shark and Squid fishing - depending on the season.  Plenty of luxury yachts/power boats moor up in the harbour so there is plenty to see - plus there are power boat rides available and power boats to hire.  As you walk along the refurbished promenade away from the harbour you will find lots of different shops and designer opticians.

There is a very well laid out sunbathing area with sunbeds looking out to sea where you can relax and watch the waves crashing in against the rocks, there are plenty of showers available to refresh at the end of the day before carrying on to the bars and restaurants.  In Kato Paphos you will also find Bar Street which is a favourite for the young people where there are numerous bars and nightclubs which all stay open until the early hours.

Upper Paphos is where you will find most of the shops for clothing etc. and not tourist gift orientated.  There are well known English names like Morgan, Dorothy Perkins, Mothercare and Marks and Spencer along with individual boutiques.  Recent new designer shops include Guess and a J-Lo shop.  There are plenty of outdoor cafes where you can enjoy an Iced Frappe and traditional Cypriot cake for example a Baklava.  Also in Upper Paphos every weekday morning there is a fruit market where you will find all the locals selling their freshly picked fruit including the very sweet and tasty Cyprus Bananas and Grapes. A small cinema is also in upper Paphos called the Oriasis which shows both english and Cypriot films.  In this area also are the council buildings, library and museum.

Leaving Paphos towards Coral Bay you will pass the famous Tomb of the Kings which is an archaeological site where you can wander around amongst the tombs and also still see the beautiful Mediterranean sea.  Coral Bay itself has developed into a small resort which has plenty of tourist shops, bars, restaurants and a few clubs.  The beach at Coral Bay is probably the best on the western side of the Island and offers lovely soft sand, shallow warm waters, plenty of watersports and bars on the beach, along with showers.  Parking with car hire at Coral Bay is very easy, literally just a few steps from the beach and there is no charge.

Towards the Coral Bay area and beyond you will pass numerous banana plantations, lemon groves, mango trees and oranges plus there are some fantastic large houses fronting the sea all along this road which leads to St. Georges Bay and further on to the Akamas.  St. Georges is a delightful quaint fishing village and if you arrive early enough in the morning you will see the local fisherman moor up with their catch of the day.  There is a tiny beach at St. Georges along with a church and a restaurant.  Car Hire is definitely recommended when visiting here as it does tend to be a small village out on its own.

Paphos, the most westerly town on Cyprus and the site of the country's second airport (13km from the town centre).  The modern part of town is known as Ktima while Kato Paphos (once confusingly known as Nea Paphos - `New Paphos') lies about 2km to the south and contains the picturesque harbour and fort as well as many important archaeoligical sites.  It should be noted that Palea Paphos - `Old Paphos` - is by the modern village of Kouklia, some 16km to the southeast, and was an important centre for the worship of Aprhodite.

Yeroskipou only a short drive with car rental: A village some 4km east of Paphos, named after the sacred garden of Aprhodite and noted for loukoumi, a sweet similar to Turkish delight.  It is also noted for its five-domed church of Ayia Paraskevi which contains paintings and murals, some dating as far back as the 9thC BC.
