Playa De Santiago Mini Guide

Playa de Santiago is situated on the west coast of Tenerife between Playa de la Arena  and Los Gigantes.  This is a more hilly area of Tenerife. The three resorts are very close together and all within easy walking distance.  It is quiet and ideal for family holidays.  This location is very Spanish with a high proportion of Spanish residents.

Consequently excellent  Canarian food can be found in the restaurants and tapas bars. Playa de Santiago only has a small beach but there is a large blue flag beach at Playa de la Arena which is ideal for swimming. The west coast of Tenerife does have some strong under-currents and caution should be exercised when bathing from the beach.  The island of La Gomera can be viewed across the water.

The mountain divides the island and is one of the island’s premier tourist attractions.  It is an active, although dormant volcano, which last erupted in 1909 and stands 3718 metres above sea level.  The volcano and its surrounding area make up the Teide National Park and is a World Heritage Site.  The National park has green pine forests, an outstanding plant world, and very interesting rock formations.

It is a real lunar landscape full of vibrant colours and a sea of white clouds. Access is by a public road.  In the winter months the mountain is usually capped with snow. Visitors can go part way to the summit by cable car, weather permitting.  Light refreshments are available. Access to the summit itself is very strictly controlled and walkers must obtain a permit in advance.

Car Hire Tips

Car Hire Check in desks will need to see your driving licence, i.e. the plastic card and the counterpart if you hold the new style UK driving licence. Be organised and get your directions in advance as unfamiliar places in an unfamiliar hire car can be daunting at first. Check out in advance which side of the road you will be driving if in a different country, most of Europe drive on the right as does the USA, but Cyprus, UK, Malta drive on the left as do Australia.
Have change ready in the currency for any toll roads you may encounter.

If travelling to a hot country or during midsummer choose a hire car with air conditioning.  Turn on the fan with the A/C button otherwise it won’t work!  If travelling to ski resorts etc. check out the winter tyre and snow chain options available.
