Corralejo Mini Guide
The small village of Corralejo, whose inhabitants used to greet fishermen returning with their catches, has grown in size and is now a popular resort which welcomes tourists. Corralejo's harbour gives spectacular views out across the Atlantic Ocean and visitors to this resort in the north of
Fuerteventura, part of the Canary Islands, will not be disappointed.
Corralejo has it all, with a sweeping view of mountains and baby blue sky mirroring the sea which is great for sailing, jet skiing, fishing and a whole range of water sports. The marina has a ferry for access to the island of Lanzarote and also sends out glass bottom boats so tourists can check out what's going on underwater. Among the glowing sands of Corralejo's dunes are some of the best beaches in Europe and several of then have been given the EC Blue Flag award which recognizes their cleanliness, the quality of the water and the environmental management of the area.
The dunes are considered to be a protected nature reserve. Those who want to swim should be aware of any signs which prohibit them to do so and not go into the water if a red flag is on the beach as this means that there could be dangerous currents. However, there are sandy white beaches right in the centre of the charming town which still has many of its original buildings. The beaches are safe for swimming and extremely convenient to use as they are near to shops and restaurants. It is easy to get out and see the rest of the island from Corralejo as there are many companies which organize walking, mountain biking and motor biking tours as well as jeep safaris. Boat trips are also available to the nearby islet of Lobos.
For those who want to relax during the day and party and night there are a number of options. They can visit bars which serve British ale and even have a chippy next door to them providing kebabs. Live acoustic music is the specialty at Rock Island bar, and at Imagine Music Bar where they encourage creative musicians who play everything from the piano to the didgeridoo. There is the Corner House Sports Bar which shows all the latest live matches, and Guinness and traditional cooking are available at Rosie O'Grady's Irish pub. Corralejo is the largest tourist resort in Fuerteventura and with easy access from the main airport, it's clear to see why so many people want to go there.
