Puerto de Jandia Mini Guide
If you are seeking sunshine in a dramatic setting, Jandia and the resort of Morro Jable on the southern coast of
Fuerteventura is the perfect location. It lies 100km away from the airport of Fuerteventura and the original sand and dirt tracks which led to the village have now been replaced by a proper route. Driving from the airport on a one hour journey along the windy coastal road towards Morro Jable it is easy to appreciate the stunning views of Fuerteventura.
Jandia is a peninsula on the south of the island and has some of the most beautiful and sandy beaches of the island. Within Jandia, Morro Jable is a small fishing port with a lighthouse which has become popular with tourists for its beaches, natural attractions and water sports.
These include taking out a catamaran for the day, taking the ferry to nearby Gran Canaria and hiring a sailing yacht or sports fishing vessel from the beach near to the lighthouse.
The old village of Morro Jable lies in a valley in the hills and is surrounded by aloe fields and the old village and the port have been connected by the new parts of the town. The resort is permanently growing in size and a new marina will be built there which will make it an even more ideal holiday for those who love getting out into the open ocean. There is also a seaside promenade in the town with lots of shops and restaurants with throwing distance of the sea.
The accommodation is first class, including the Iberostar palace Fuerteventura on Jandia beach which has received rave reviews from guests, some of whom called it an oasis of peace and remarked that they had had the best vacation of their lives there. The resort is now very desirable, especially with German and English tourists, and from having only 200 inhabitants in the village, Morro Jable can now accommodate 8,000 visitors.
The Morro Jable beach is still unspoilt though and flanked by bright purple bougainvillea bushes, though the area as a whole is quite rocky and has fewer plants than other parts of the island. Jandia is home to the 807 metre Pico de Zarza, an extinct volcano, and with beaches which are as long as 35 km there is no doubt that the scenery is some of the most jaw-dropping you will find on a European holiday.
