Costa Calma Mini Guide
Costa Calma is as tranquil as its name would suggest, and it is a haven for beach lovers, water sport enthusiasts and nature lovers. This resort on the Jandia peninsula in the southern part of the island has long been a hidden gem, only having been discovered by tourists properly in the late 1970s. Now the industry is booming, with many tourists coming from Germany and more than 8,000 beds available.
Because of this, plans are afoot to build a marina and a new shopping centre. The resort is famous for its vast and well-maintained white sandy beaches which are overlooked by a number of hotels which are within strolling distance of the sea. The opulent Hotel Rio is among them which can boast its own waterfall and fresh water sea pool.
The Sunrise Costa Calma Beach resort has also got good reviews from travellers with its food being particularly praised and there are many other high quality hotels. Apartments are in abundance too, and are often self-catering with their own private pools. Many of them have shady gardens with Canaria pines and palm trees to shelter under.
A special green zone of sub-tropical forest lies behind the hotels which is home to many exotic birds and provides an excellent place to walk through and explore. Providing a backdrop to Costa Calma is a sleeping giant in the distance - the now extinct Pico de Zarza volcano. Visitors can experience the charm of real life in the Canary Islands when they visit Costa Calma because of its Sunday morning market which is lively and colourful and has a range of goods being purveyed by stallholders.
The long beach at the resort is a good place to exercise or sunbathe when the heat is on in the middle of the day. Windsurfers are particularly drawn to Costa Calma because of the strong offshore winds, and the Playa Sotavento hosts the annual world windsurfing championships. But it is almost always possible to find a secluded spot on the lengthy Playa Barca to the southwest. The waters are very calm in Costa Calma and so families with young ones can have peace of mind. All in all it is an ideal destination if relaxation is your number one priority.
