Should I pay for Extra Car Hire Insurance?

Should I pay for extra car hire insurance is a question many customers ask. I would always suggest taking out the Full Protection cover at the point of booking.

Usually a customer will be given a quote and then at the point of booking there is the option to either select basic cover or Full Protection. Which should you choose?

Basic Cover

Full Protection

  • Collision Damage Waiver - €1000* Excess
  • Theft Protection - €1000* Excess
  • The Car’s Excess
  • Windows
  • Mirrors
  • Wheels and Tyres
  • Administration Costs
  • Breakdown Charges
  • Peace of mind
* €1000* Excess typical rental car excess deposit for compact class car

Another way of looking at the differences between the two types of policy is by comparing the Basic Cover to the equivalent of third party motor insurance and the Full Protection to Fully Comprehensive. A recent report by the BBC found that drivers paid on average £781 a year for a fully comprehensive insurance Policy. While many of us are more than happy to pay for the cost of fully comprehensive insurance for our day-to-day vehicles, there is often a hesitation about whether to opt for the policy equivalent with your rental car.

At Rhino we carried out some research into the current cost of full protection cover and are pleased to report that it offers great value for money. While the average car Insurance Premium is at an all time high – risen by an average of £110 in the last year. Car Hire Insurance premiums are staying at a low and affordable cost. For 14 days full protection cover to some of this summer’s top destinations you are looking at the low cost of just £6.87 a day. This will leave you fully protected against all driving eventualities and give you the peace of mind you need to enjoy driving your rental car whilst on holiday.

The price per day of Full Protection Insurance reduces the longer you have it for. So if you are going on holiday for a two-week period, it is definitely worth having the cover for the full 14 days. The table above illustrates the costs.

Full protection cover is quick and easy to add to your booking. Once you have selected your vehicle we will offer you the chance of adding Full Protection to your booking. Simply follow the prompts during the booking process:
