In order to make your car hire experience as stress free as possible, we’ve also created a handy 5-point checklist of things you need to remember when hiring a car. These are detailed below:

1. Car Hire Licence Check Code – What is it and why do I need it?
When hiring a car the car hire company will often ask you for a check code, at the collection desk. A check code can be obtained by going on to the DVLA website. Here you will be asked to enter some key details including, your driver number, your postcode and your national insurance number. Once this information has been entered online you will then be awarded a licence check code. This code is then valid for 21 days and should be shared with the car hire company on request. This is in order for the company to check any endorsements, which may have been placed on a driver’s license. The licence check code was introduced after the
abolishment of paper counterparts, which previously showed details of any licence endorsements (speeding, drink-driving etc.).
2. Rental Voucher
Once you have made your booking with Rhino Car Hire you will be emailed a rental voucher. This will contain details of the type of car you have booked, your pick up and drop off details, insurance and the total cost. You will need to show the rental voucher at the collection desk as it contains the booking reference number, which is specific to the car hire company providing the car.
3. Correct Licence
In order to hire a car you will be asked to provide evidence of your driving licence. For the majority of drivers this will be a Photocard licence. There will be a small number of drivers who hold an
old style paper driving licence; these are still valid as long as none of the key details, such as the driver’s name or address have changed. In addition to showing the correct licence you will also be required to show a licence check code as detailed above.
4. Credit Card
A credit card is needed at the collection desk. The car hire company will request this when completing the booking. The credit card must be in the name of the driver who is hiring the car. The driver must ensure they have sufficient funds on the credit card to cover the deposit. Please note it is possible to pay for your
car hire with a debit card, however a credit card must be produced on request when collecting your hire car.
5. Insurance
If you have taken up the option of our Full Protection insurance this will show up on your rental voucher, which is emailed to you at the time of booking. All rentals include the mandatory car insurance to drive the car, however there is always an insurance excess payable in the event of a claim, on rental cars this is often significantly higher than your domestic car insurance so we would advise looking at options to insure against, or removing this. If you decide not to take up our Full Protection policy you can look for third party cover (please check exclusions) or pay for additional insurance at the collection desk. Please be advised that obtaining insurance at the collection desk is not cost effective and we would always advise taking up the full protection insurance at the time of booking with Rhino.
* IDP – An IDP is an International Driving Permit and is required when driving abroad in certain countries. Countries that recommend or require you to have an IDP include The USA, Brazil and Hong Kong. It is advisable to check if you require an IDP at the time of booking.
